• Contact Lens Fitter (FL) - An optician or other ancillary support staff person who, where authorized by state law and trained or certified to do so, may fit or dispense contact lenses to a patient based on the prescription of an optometrist or medical physician.
• Ocularist - An ocularist is someone who specializes in the fabrication and fitting of ocular prostheses for people who have lost an eye or eyes due to trauma or illness. The fabrication process for a custom made eye typically includes taking an impression of the eye socket, shaping a plastic shell, painting the iris and then fitting the ocular prostheses. In addition to creating the prosthetic eye, they show the patient how to care for and handle the prosthesis. Ocularists may develop their skills from various background disciplines, for example medical, optometry, dental, nursing, biology, medical arts and illustration.
• Ophthalmic Assistant - Ophthalmic assistants help ophthalmologists care for patients by taking histories, performing various procedures and tests, and preparing patients to see the doctor. Their work provides the ophthalmologist with important information to help diagnose and treat patients.
• Optician (FL) - An optician is a specialized eye care practitioner who designs, fits and dispenses lenses to correct a person's vision. Opticians determine the specifications of various ophthalmic devices that will give correct a person's eyesight. Some registered or licensed Opticians design and fit specialized appliances to correct cosmetic, traumatic or physical defects. Other registered or licensed Opticians may also design and manufacture lenses as well as spectacle frames and other devices.
• Orthoptist - Orthopists are eye care specialists who work with ophthalmologists to evaluate and treat eye movement and alignment disorders. Orthopists help patients manage or cure ocular conditions such as crossed eyes, double vision and lazy eye (amblyopia). Orthopists may also assist ophthalmologists create treatment plans including eye exercises, eye patches, eye drops or special glasses.
